Extensive research (including a survey of 112 businesses) and stakeholder participation (including numerous theme focused workshops) informed the development of the Buffalo City Regional Economic Strategy. Three broad phases were identified (Phase 1: Enabling Business Environment and Economic Foundations; Phase 2: Existing Business Retention and Expansion; Phase 3: Growth Opportunities) together with a detailed set of programmes and projects for each phase. These addressed the need to realise the region’s tourism, service, and agriculture-rural economy and diversify the economy to be less reliant on the automotive sector.
