The Trade and Industry Chamber of the National Economic Development and Labour Advisory Council of South Africa (NEDLAC) commissioned Rae Wolpe to develop a comprehensive South African National Retail Development Strategy. The research process included a literature review, interviews and focus groups with multi-nationals invested in South Africa and other industry stakeholders including trade unions, international case studies of the retail sector in India, Malaysia, United Kingdom and Australia), both a macro-economic and Computable General Equilibrium modelling and scenario development exercise, and a strategy formulation process. The comprehensive strategy and recommendations included recommendations to enhance stakeholder relations between labour, industry and government, improve industry governance, address Decent Work improvements, strengthen supplier development and market access for smaller manufacturers, and facilitate expansion into Africa.
