The Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) Red Tape Reduction Unit appointed Impact Economix to work with two local municipalities in the Overberg District (Overstrand and Cape Agulhas Local Municipalities) to reduce red tape affecting business locally. 342 Business completed an online survey on municipal red tape. Face to face interviews were conducted with 36 informal businesses. 3 red tape workshops with formal and informal businesses were also held per municipality. Action plans were developed jointly with municipal officials and business representatives to address the following red tape issues: Improving the building plan approval process; improved processes for the leasing of municipal premises and land; improved stakeholder coordination and communication to address access to land for agricultural purposes; a range of actions to improve the identification and enforcement of illegal land-uses; and improvements to the municipal Complaints System to help manage and track client complaints better.
