Impact Economix partnered with Fetola on this project. The primary objective of the study is to create a multi-dimensional database of all South African business development support (BDS) service providers and to identify market failures in the provision of BDS services in South Africa. The project aims to identify (through a national survey) as many BDS service providers as possible in South Africa (including, for example, incubators, accelerators, mentors, coaches, business trainers and general BDS service providers). A total of 445 BDS service provider organisations were identified and surveyed across the various Provinces. In addition, the research involved a preliminary identification of potential market failures in the provision of BDS services (through BDS service provider perceptions of SMME demand and BDS service supply for specific BDS services). It is hoped that SEDA will take forward the project in a number of ways including exploring the provision of a national online searchable database of Business Development Services Providers to improve SMME awareness and access to a range of relevant BDS services.
